Manchester United to make £20m summer Shaw bid

The reigning Premier League champions are increasingly confident of luring the Southampton left-back to Old Trafford despite facing competition from Chelsea for his signature.

Manchester United will make a £20 million bid for Luke Shaw this summer, with the Premier League champions increasingly confident of tempting the Southampton star to Old Trafford.

The left-back, a boyhood Chelsea fan, is keen to speak to the Blues ahead of the summer but Old Trafford sources have also received indications that the 18-year-old would be open to joining David Moyes's side.

Goal revealed in January that initial talks over a move for Shaw had begun but the England Under-21 international was happy to see out the rest of this season at St Mary's Stadium before evaluating his options in the summer.

Moyes plans significant overhaul

Nemanja Vidic's Old Trafford exit, announced on Thursday, is only the start of a huge summer clear out to be conducted by the Premier League champions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This summer, David Moyes will conduct the most significant overhaul of a Manchester United squad in living memory. Up to 10 senior players, with over 30 Premier League medals between them, will be allowed to leave Old Trafford in a renovation project of staggering proportions.

Put simply, Moyes is ripping the champions up and starting again.

Nemanja Vidic, whose exit this summer was confirmed on Thursday, is set to be joined by Rio Ferdinand, Rafael, Nani, Anderson, Patrice Evra, Shinji Kagawa, Alexander Buttner on the list of players that the United manager will tell to look for other clubs over the coming months. His pursuit of Luke Shaw, revealed by Goal on Saturday, is merely the beginning of a six-month process by which he intends to transform his playing staff. 

'We would take any win' – David Moyes

The Scot has urged his side to improve on recent performances against Rene Meulensteen's men and wants players to stake their claim to be the club's new captain.

Manchester United boss David Moyes says his side “would take any win” as they prepare to face Fulham on Sunday.

The reigning Premier League champions face the division’s bottom side at Old Trafford, hoping to bounce back from defeat to Stoke City last time out.

United have already lost eight times in the league this season and Moyes admits three points are crucial for his side on Sunday.

Young wins Goal of the Month for January

Ashley Young's blistering effort in the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City has earned the winger the Manchester United Goal of the Month award for January.  

Young enjoyed a fine game against the Bluebirds, providing the cross that led to an early opener from Robin van Persie and later sealing maximum points with a powerful low drive from 25 yards.
"It ranks up there with my best," Ashley told MUTV. "As soon as I struck it, I thought it had a good chance of going in and I think I was celebrating before it hit the back of the net."
United manager David Moyes added: "Everybody knows that Ash is capable of that and I am pleased for him because he works hard. There is a lot of competition for places and he is pushing hard to play."
Young was a comfortable winner of the award with his strike earning 63 per cent of the votes. Jesse Lingard's solo effort for the Under-21s against Southampton was the runner-up with 16 per cent, while Javier Hernandez came third with 11 per cent for his extra-time goal against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup

Mata relishes attacking link-up

Juan Mata says he has been working hard on building an understanding with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, insisting top players are capable of playing alongside anyone.
 
The trio lined up together for the first time for last weekend's trip to Stoke with Mata and van Persie combining for United's goal in the 2-1 defeat.
The Spain international says he already feels settled at United and is relishing the chance to play alongside players of the calibre of Rooney and van Persie, as well as the burgeoning talent of Adnan Januzaj.
"We have been working on things in training to try to link better and understand each other better," Mata told MUTV. "But when you talk about players like them, they are top players so it's easy to play with them.

Moyes: Vidic will stay as Man Utd captain

   
The Scot believes the centre-back's professionalism means he will continue to contribute to the English champions until he leaves at the end of the season.

Manchester United manager David Moyes says Nemanja Vidic will remain as captain despite deciding to leave the club in the summer.

Vidic confirmed on Thursday that he will be moving on when his contract expires at the end of the season, bringing eight years of service at Old Trafford to a close.

But Moyes has no concerns about the defender's commitment and confirmed that he will continue as captain.

"No, [I would not take away the captaincy from] somebody like Vida given the type of man he is," he told the club's official website.
